Aims：

To cultivate students’ passion for learning and using English (Attitude);
To equip students with the skills to learn English, thus gradually become life-long learner (Skills);
To foster students’ language capabilities to communicate and acquire knowledge in various subjects (Knowledge).

Curriculum：

Task-based Learning Approach

Task-based learning approach was adopted to facilitate the integrative use of language in meaningful and purposeful contexts. Different learning activities were designed to meet the objectives of the tasks. Coherence in vocabulary, text types, phonics, grammar items and language structures were ensured in the thematic tasks. Through these purposeful language teaching activities, we hope to provide our students with a scaffold to develop, practise, recycle and consolidate the knowledge and skills needed for the completion of the unit tasks or extended task in the end. We believe that effective tasks lead to successful learning.

Reading Programme

(A) Primary Literacy Programme – Reading and Writing (P.1-3)

Students in P.1-P.3 are taught by the NET in collaboration with their class English teachers. Reading and writing skills, which are based on the theme books, are taught during the year. Many of the activities are closely related to the skills planned by the NET and English teachers during meetings every week. Students participate in oral discussions, shared reading, group and pair work activities. Students’ work is examined and placed in an individual portfolio to be taken home at the end of each academic year.

(B) Reading Workshop for P.4-6

A part-time NET is employed to implement the Reading Workshop for P.4-P.6 students. Different reading strategies are introduced to enhance the students’ reading skills.

Our school-based reading programme has been optimised with the enrichment of STEM readers, science activities and tailor-made reading tasks. Two STEM reading modules have been introduced. There is practical application of target grammar and language structures in scientific contexts. Students are exposed to various scientific texts, carry out experiments and record the results and findings in their school-based booklets.

(D) e-reading platform

To promote e-learning and cultivate students’ reading interest, collections of fiction and nonfiction stories from the e-reading platform are provided to enrich the students’ reading experience. Students are encouraged to read according to their reading levels.

P.1 School-Based Phonics Programme

Each week, P.1 students have one English phonics lesson with our NET in order to help them develop the skills to decode and read words and thus to develop a strong foundation in reading. The lessons are conducted with the use of songs, phonics books and school-based materials.

English activities

Various kinds of activities are conducted throughout the school year, such as morning assembly, Lunch Break with Ms. Tasha, Campus TV, project learning and quiz competition. The activities are appropriate to students’ levels, and reinforce their vocabulary and strengthen their language skills.

Wonderful Wednesdays

Every Wednesday, there is English Reading Time before the morning assembly and sometimes students are invited to come out to share what they read. Moreover, morning prayers are conducted in English so that students can immerse in the English language environment. Booth games, such as spelling games and Christmas tree decoration are held and students are eager to participate in the activities.

Lunch break with Ms. Tasha

P.1 and P.2 students took turns to go the English room and play games with Ms. Tasha and English Ambassadors for the lunch break. Through this activity, they can learn English terminology used in games in a casual and authentic context and utilise them to chat with their classmates as they play.

Riddle competition

With the aim of providing an engaging English learning experience for every student, a riddle competition took place at this year’s Lantern Festival. It was an excellent opportunity to broaden students’ vocabulary, test their problem-solving skills and let them enjoy the traditional Chinese festive atmosphere with their peers.

Book Sharing Competition

A book sharing competition was held to encourage students to develop a love for reading while improving their language skills. Through the Flip e-platform, students can participate remotely and share their favorite books under the topics ‘Joy’ and ‘Poverty’ with fellow students. The participation in this competition was quite remarkable and the videos got thousands of views!

English Quiz Competition

To engage and enlighten the students, the English Quiz Competition was held for all P.1-6 students. It was conducted in an interactive way and the teams participated with great enthusiasm. The quiz comprised of various questions such as riddles and open-ended questions. Students thoroughly enjoyed the interesting and challenging rounds.

Musical Appreciation

We believe that learning English can occur in many different forms. Students can definitely gain a lot from watching English drama performances. This year, we are delighted to be invited by Shatin Pui Ying College to watch the musical ‘Attune’. Students were thrilled to watch the show which showcases abundant gifts of language, music, dance, creativity and leadership. At the end of the show, our primary kids highly appreciated the script, the songs and the costume in the play.

English competitions outside school

To enrich students’ learning experience and give them an opportunity to hone their skills, we encouraged them to participate in different competitions. This year, we joined several competitions, including English Usage Competition, SOW Letter Writing Competition, the 75th Hong Kong Schools Speech Festival (English Speech), the 8^th Story Writing Competition etc. Students performed well and some even got awards in the competitions!
